Mrs. Obama said her family was not rich. Like many Chinese students, her parents had big dreams for her. She felt the weight of her parents' sacrifices（犧牲） on her shoulders and worked hard to make them proud. Persevering was not easy, though. Sometimes she had to wake up at 4:30 am and study late into the night. "But whenever I got tired or discouraged(氣餒 WJ)... I would remember something my mother. always told me. She said: 'A good education is something that no one cart take away from you.''
Mrs. Obama also encourages Chinese students to study abroad to broaden their horizons（開闊眼界） in her speech at Peking University. "As the Chinese saying goes: It is better to travel 10,000 miles than to read 10,000 books," she said. It's not enough to get good grades in school. It's also important to have real experience with languages, cultures and societies different from your own, she noted.
Studying overseas could also benefit future international relations. It could help young people from different countries work together to deal with shared problems such as climate change, Mrs. Obama said.

It was a cold day, but the students from Prosser Middle School in Chicago were sorting through the waste when they found that their school produces 1,500 pounds every day.
Prosser is just one school that throws out nearly 4,000 meal trays every day. Counting all of Chicago’s public schools, the number comes to nearly a quarter of a million a day. That’s more than 1 million a week and about 5 million a month.

Jay Stream Middle School in Illinois teaches its students how to collect trays. The school has cut its lunchroom waste by two thirds now that students recycle their used trays instead of breaking them.
Prosser Middle School also sees the benefits of the program. Students have organized about 20 clubs and volunteer activities to cut down on cafeteria garbage. They now recycle 80 percent of the school waste. “ I joined the club,” said Erika Santana, a 16-year-old junior in Prosser, “because I want to make Earth a better place.”

Teens Enjoy Reading
According to a survey on reading conducted by the U.S. National Education Association (NEA), young Americans say reading is important—more important than computers and science. Over 50% of the twelve to eighteen years old children interviewed said they enjoy reading a lot. Seventy-nine percent find it stimulating and interesting, and 87% think it is relaxing. Most of those surveyed (68%) disagree with the opinion that reading is boring, or old-fashioned.
Teens Read Variety of Material
Over half the teenagers interviewed said they read more than ten books a year. The results also showed that middle school students read more books than high school students. Most teens (66%) like to read fiction, such as novels and stories. Only 26% were interested in non-fiction, such as biographies and history books. Sixty-four percent of students liked reading ‘stories about people of my own age’ as their favorite topic. Mysteries and detective stories came second on the list at 53%. Just under 50% said they were interested in reading about their own culture and heritage.
Other Interests
Of the teenagers who took part in the survey, 49% said that libraries are where they get most of their books. However, many complained that their school libraries do not have enough up-to-date, interesting books and magazines. Even though many teenagers in the U.S. enjoy reading, they still have other interests. When asked which activity would be the most difficult to give up for a week, 48% said listening to music. TV would be difficult to give up for 25% of those surveyed.

Another survey which is published by www. SmartGirl.com studied the differences between teenage boys’ and girls’ reading habits. According to the report, more girls than boys read for fun. Many more girls (77%) than boys (6%) read fashion and beauty magazines. More boys (47%) than girls (7%) read magazines about video games, but an equal number of each like to read adventure stories and newspapers. Girls also read more material about celebrities and social issues such as crime, drugs, or poverty. Boys, on the other hand, read more about sports.

After they finish training, the astronauts continue to work. They stay in good shape by running and doing exercise. They read about their special jobs. In that way they can learn new facts about space travel.
Then the big day comes. The astronaut is told to go to work on a flight into space. The crew members（全體船員）get to know each other first. Then they can learn which job each will do.
